Coming Events

Happy New Year To All

We hope 2015 proves to be a Great Year for all.  Our Tennis Club numbers have taken a growth spurt in the last week with all the January arrivals.  To that end, we have several updates to communicate.

1.  Let's all turn out for the Wednesday Happy Hour this week to welcome and meet and greet the new arrivals. In addition, as she mentioned earlier, Sandy Murray is anxious to get volunteers in place to help with the Tennis Club Open House scheduled for Saturday January 17 from 11:00 to 2:00.  In addition to that business, Helen Arnold will be set up for new arrivals (and anyone else who hasn't already) to pay their annual dues -- still $20 per couple, $15 per individual member.  HAPPY HOUR - 4:00 to ?.

2.  As we are all aware, Sun has their second Welcome Home party scheduled for this coming Saturday Jan 10th.  The Tennis Club will be manning a booth there for further collection of dues, and to meet and greet interested potential new tennis players.  Helen will be there, and Sandy will also be in attendance to distribute flyers describing our Tennis Program, and inviting folks to join us for lunch at our Saturday Jan 17th Open House.  We could use some help relieving them in the booth, so they can also enjoy some lunch.  Please talk to them.

3.  As we start our "second season", and make our membership recruiting drive, and with the return to Palm Creek of Mary Ellen Halm, we are ready to start the Beginner and Intermediate lessons with Mary Ellen and Larry Marik TOMORROWJanuary 5th.  We will start the Advanced lesson program with Mark Costello the following Monday - Jan 12th.  All lessons will be in the 1:00 to 2:30 time slot utilizing courts 5 through 8 for lessons, and court 4 will provide an opportunity to incorporate the new backboard in the lesson programs in that same time slot.  Hank will have ball machines set up on other available courts for all to use in that same time period.  Technically courts are reserved until 3:00 for these groups -- as needed.

4.  As mentioned earlier, our Open House is scheduled for Saturday the 17th.  Our goals are:
~~To meet and greet potential new players to our club.
~~Reintroduce or introduce all who might be interested in being a part of our club to the game.
~~Put our best foot forward on how easy it is to get started.
~~Make sure they get information about the variety of play options we offer - starting with Social Tennis.
~~Get them on the court with some of our players if they are ready, or with the ball machines or backboard.
~~Share lunch with them and make sure they realize what a great social group we are.
We need as many of our current members there as possible to accomplish these goals.  Please plan on being there in numbers from 11:00 to 2:00 to help communicate our goals.  Be ready to step up as needed.

5.  Our Superbowl of Tennis II is coming up on January 30th and 31st.  This tournament is part of our Cancer Awareness fund raising campaign in support of the overall Palm Creek drive.  All who participated last year had a great time.  We will need 48 players (plus a few sub/reserve players) to sign up to make up the 6 teams who will compete.  There is a $10 fee for participation with 100% of those dollars going into our Cancer drive kitty.  Following the championship round of play Saturday afternoon Jan 31st, we will again have a dinner - this year with a new twist we are sure you will enjoy, and recognition awards for winning Superbowl teams, with the grand finale being our fundraiser auction conducted by our entertaining and award winning auctioneer Nancy Restum. Once again this year the January arriving group from Hot Springs is stepping up to the plate to pull this event together.  Thanks to Harlen and Janice Jensen who will be running the show this year.
WATCH THE BULLETIN BOARD FOR TOURNAMENT DETAIL AND SIGN UP SHEETS TO APPEAR IN THE NEXT DAY OR 2.

THE SEASON'S FIRST SOCIAL EVENT !

On Saturday, November 22 the Tennis Club held their first "mixer-upper" of the season.  It was a 'tournament' of sorts beginning around 1pm with a random draw held for partners.  The partners played in a "first to six-game set." Then partners were moved into the next bracket.  A good time was had by all on the sunny afternoon.

Tennis club members then gathered together again at 5:30pm for a tasty pizza and salad dinner provided by the club.  After dinner, our management team led a discussion of upcoming events and other tennis business.  It was great to see all the old familiar faces.

We'll look for you on the courts in the upcoming days!

Mike connects with a good forehand in an early round of the tournament.

Judy stretches out to take a volley.

Some intense tournament spectating!
Jalene and Bob finished a "strong" second place...and won
some prizes for their efforts.  Congratulations!

SOCIAL "MIXER-UPPER" coming November 22

ATTENTION ALL PALM CREEK TENNIS PLAYERS!!!
On Saturday November 22nd, we will be holding our first Social Mixer-upper designed to provide an opportunity for a tournament like playoff which pairs players of all levels and genders together.  Here’s how it will work:
1.      A sign-up sheet will be posted on Monday November 10th.  There will only be space for 32 players in the format – so the first 32 to sign up will be the ones who participate – regardless of your level of play or your gender.
2.      The event coordinator will be responsible for dividing the 32 players into 2 groups of 16 players.  The team leaders (16 players) will be selected from the most advanced players of the 32 with no regard for gender.  The other group of 16 is obviously those not placed in the first 16.
3.      On Saturday Nov 22nd, at 12:45PM, each team leader will draw a name from the second group.  The name drawn is his/her partner for the day.  Teams can be all men, all women, or mixed depending on the draw.  Teams will be assured a minimum of 2 matches.
4.      Players are assigned their opening round courts, and play begins.  Each round is decided by the first team to win 6 games.  Games are scored as normal with the exception that second deuce is game point.  Winners of each round need to report results to the scorer’s table immediately after their match is completed.
5.      Second round play begins with a winner’s bracket and a consolation bracket as decided in the first round.  A playoff sheet will be posted at the scorer’s table providing instruction for next round pairing and court assignment.  The subsequent rounds are played out by the same format as the first round.
6.      Play continues for each team until they either experience a loss (after the first round), or win their bracket.
7.      Winners of the final round of play for both winner’s bracket and consolation bracket will be decided by the first team to win 6 games by 2.
8.      High profile/valuable prizes will be awarded to the winners of both brackets.
Play will begin at 1:00 PM.  Please be at the courts by 12:45
Spectators and cheerleaders are welcomed!!!!!!!

Off to a great start!

The 2014/2015 season got off to a great start for the Palm Creek Tennis Club with most of the courts filled with players enjoying one of the most popular of the tennis club’s organized play activities, Social Tennis.  Social Tennis provides a fun game of tennis for players of any level.  Every day, Monday through Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 courts 5 -8 are open to any player who wants to enjoy the great game of tennis.   Come out to the courts and rotate in for 4 games.  The players on the court change with
every game.  You’ll find a great group of people who love the game in a welcoming environment.

Every Wednesday at 4 PM the tennis club holds its weekly happy hour.  Everyone brings a snack to share and their beverage of choice.  If you are interested in learning more about the Palm Creek Tennis Club, come out to the Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday evening and meet some new friends.

And, if you want to hit some balls by yourself, come out to court #4 and tryout the new Bakko Backboard.  With a large surface and curved dimensions this state of the art
Backboard provides some interesting return balls that is great fun for anyone regardless of level of play.

So, if you have played tennis or if you would like to play tennis, come check out the new tennis courts and all the tennis club has to offer!

WELCOME TO THE 2014-15 TENNIS SEASON
AT THE PALM CREEK TENNIS CENTER!!!!

 LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!!!
1.  Listed as pages in the right-hand column  are 4 documents to help kick start things.
    A. 2014-15 Version of the "Tennis Anyone" piece that will explain our organized play schedule for the year with pertinent information relative to program leaders, etc.  This piece will also be available in the display box at the courts, and in the Activities office for new arrivals.  We will also attempt to have it included in the PC sign-in/Welcome packet.
    B.  Our  detailed court schedules  from last season is much the same as this year's- showing events and program coordinators, individual court schedules, and timelines for all regularly scheduled play.  This will be frequently updated, distributed via email, and displayed at the courts.  A new one will be posted soon.
    C.  An updated version of the 2014-15 Tennis Club Management Team from the copy sent out a few days ago -- with more changes to follow.

    D.  Our tentative Social Calendar.

2.  We are planning the official launch of the new season for MONDAY NOVEMBER 3.  According to Weather Bug, temperatures will moderate from the low to the high 70's with lows in the upper 40's to upper 50's next week.
Social tennis moves to a 5 day schedule of 9:30 to 11:00 on courts 5 through 8.  Hank and his court coordinators will be announcing some minor revisions to play format which we are confident will "make Social even better".
Mens Ladder League, Ladies Ladder League, and Mixed Ladder Leagues - could, and hopefully will get started next week. Signup sheets are posted on the south side of the bulletin board NOW.  Program coordinators Jim Weaver, Sandy Murray, and Mike Murray stand ready to get started as soon as a minimum of 12 names show up on each signup sheet.  This year we will conduct 2 Ladder League sessions.  The first will be from now until January 1, with the second starting around January 1 through the rest of our season.  Signup sheets for this first session NEED TO STAY ON THE BOARD so new arrivals can sign up and be folded into the play schedule for the next session.  PLEASE SIGN UP - DO NOT JUST WALK ON.  Recognize that it is very difficult to run a pure Ladder League in this first session due to constantly evolving roster.  Work with the coordinators and we can still have good competitive matches.  Also remember that in order to run an effective ladder program -- to the best of your ability,  plan on playing every week.  If you can't, please communicate with your coordinators.

3.  We are ready (immediately) to book seasonal reservations for those who wish to reserve a day and court for the whole season.  Organize your group, choose a spokesperson for the group, and call Jim Weaver to set those bookings for the season.  When the next update of the play schedule is circulated, your reserved court/courts and times will be included and we are preparing to list them on the white board at the courts as well.

4.  Additional information will be forthcoming as the coordinators of other organized play activities arrive, and finalize their plans for starting their regular schedules.

5.  I am having difficulty connecting with maintenance to get the new BAKKO Backboard installed.  But I'm confident we will get that done in the near future.

6.  Courts 1 through 4 repairs are nearing completion and the courts should be playable by the first of next week.

7.  Our first regular club meeting is scheduled for Saturday November 22nd.  More on that later.

8.  We are hopeful that we can all get together at the courts for our first Happy Hour within the next 2 weeks.  We have some things we would like to review with all  of you, and the courts will be the best place to do it.

9.  We are also hopeful that we will have our first "Mixer Upper" tournament by the first of December.  This will be a Saturday afternoon event that will be fast paced, and will allow for a LOT of players (all skill levels - both genders) to participate.  At the same time we should be able complete the tournament in 3 hours +/-.

LET'S HAVE A GREAT SEASON!!!!
