Hi all,
The tennis tournament was a great success, with 37 teams competing in Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  Connie Emerson and Penny Mason did a fantastic job.  Today was a bit windy but most of the matches were played.  Sadly, due to the weather, we had to move the dinner to the Saguaro Room but the food was delicous and everyone had a great time.

Bingo Table and Chair take down– Monday Evening – Ballroom at 9pm
Our first Bingo take down is the Monday, February 25th at about 9PM.  The more people we have the faster it gets done.  In the past we have been finished in 15 minutes when we have a good crowd.  The chairs need to be folded and placed on the racks.  The tables need to be stacked.  If you can fold a chair you will be a great help.  The tennis club will get approximately $700 in expenses reimbursed for our efforts.  So please come out to the Ballroom on Monday night and help out.

Saturday Night at the Courts – All tennis club members and friends are cordially invited to attend
Mark your calendar right now for Saturday Night, March 9th for one of the most popular tennis club events, Saturday Night at the Courts.  Every couple is asked to dress up in their finest “black tie” attire  (as many of us don’t have formal wear we just ask for some creative black and white attire) bring a bottle of wine to put on the wine tasting tables and an appetizer to share.  We move tables and chairs on to Court #6 and we do a lot of wine tasting, snacking and socializing.  We will have some fun tennis to watch during the evening.  We close the evening with coffee and a nice array of desserts.  We’ll have more information coming your way.  But for right now, please save the date – its lots of fun!!

Desert Cactus Tennis League – Survey Results
The results are in:
Men’s Division will play on Wednesdays at 2pm
Women’s Division will play on Thursdays at 2pm
Mixed Division will play at Saturday at 2pm
Two sessions will be offered:
-November to late January
- Early February to the end of March
Teams will be limited to 6 players
Individuals will pay a flat rate per session.

I think it would be great if we could show our fellow communities the caliber of tennis at Palm Creek.  Remember this is for all levels of tennis from 4.0 to 2.5.  You will be playing with teams at the same level.  So, when you are planning your schedule for next season, save these days so we can share our love of the game with some new and fun loving neighbors.

People Update
-Kathy Jensen and Bonita Morgan are showing off their new knees.  Both of them are out and about and are doing just great.
-Patti Blessen is recovering from a bout of pneumonia.  She stopped by the tennis tournament to cheer on her friends.  Its great to see her doing so well.

Save the date – Sunday, March 17th  5:00 PM
The annual meeting of the tennis club will take place in the San Tan Room.  It’s a pizza party to thank all of our members for their support of the tennis club in the 2012/2013 season.  We will also be voting on and welcoming the new club officers and committee chairs for the 2013/2014 season.

As soon as my back gets better I hope to see you on the courts,
Kate

Kate's weekly update-February 17

Hi all,
I am so proud to announce that the Palm Creek Tennis Club delivered a check in the amount of $3,360.50 as a result of our Cancer Awareness events.  Standing ovation for Nancy Restum and Penny Jacobsen on an incredible job!!!

Notes from:
Wendell: Not only are you filling the tennis courts but your group is also making a big contribution to our community.  Congratulations and Thank You.
Ann Lykens: $3360.50 for Cancer Awareness!  That is WONDERFUL!  Nancy Restum, Penny Jacobsen, you and the entire tennis organization did a great job!  Thank you so much for all that you do!
Diane Gaines: Kate, Nancy and Penny.  This is an amazing contribution to the annual Cancer Awareness project, and is going to benefit so many people in our local community.  I know there were many hours of work spent organizing, holding and finalizing this event and everyone is to be congratulated.  Tennis is currently the top contributor this year and will be given honors in our newsletter.  Well done!  Diane

Tuesday – Happy Hours
There is a group that would like to schedule a tennis club happy hour this coming Tuesday, Feb 19th right after tennis lessons which end around 3:30 pm.  So, bring a snack to share and BYOB and come on out to the tennis pavillion.

Tennis Club Roster and Park phone numbers
Attached to this email is a complete list of tennis club members and players and their in park phone numbers.  We try to leave on the roster those who may return to the park but, as they are not here this season they will not have paid dues this season.  It is our hope that all those who participate in club activities pay dues to support the ongoing activities of our tennis club.  If you have not yet paid your dues you can contact Helen Arnold at 6865.  Also, please know that this roster is always available on the tennis club’s website www.PalmCreekTennisClub.blogspot.com  A huge thank you to our Club Secretary, Sandy Hurlbert who has done an incredible job of putting all of this together for us.

Palm Creek 2013 Tennis Tournament
Our tournament is now only days away.  There will be no social tennis or scheduled play on Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday February 21 through 24.  But, please come out to the courts and cheer on our players.  Ladies are playing from 9-11, Men’s matches from 11-1 and Mixed matches will be played from 1-3.

Everyone who wants to attend the Awards Celebration dinner must sign up.  The sign up sheets are posted on the bulletin board.  The cost per person is a very reasonable $3.  So please come out, players, non-players, spouses, friends and guests and join in the fun.

Desert Cactus League
We have a great opportunity next season to get some fun competitive play from the tennis players in the area.  This year the Women’s and Men’s matches were originally scheduled the same day as the Palm Creek leagues.  Dave Pratt did a great job of forming two Men’s teams and getting men’s play moved to Wednesday.  Orly Maron, chair of the Desert Cactus League, sent out a survey to see what day would be best for next season.  I don’t share your email address with anyone so you were not sent this survey.  I do have the results to date and right now the Ladies have the largest percentage voting for Mondays at 2pm which would not work for our ladies.  But that is with only 10 people voting for that time and day.   I think it would be great for Palm Creek to be able to form some teams and play in either the 3.5-4.0, or 3.5, 3.0 or 2.5 divisions.  The only way for us to be heard is for me to share your email address with Orly.  If you would be interested in playing in this league and would be willing to answer the six questions on the survey, please reply back to this email and I will send her your email address.  She has held up closing the survey in order for Palm Creek to participate.   I know that she is also extremely conscientious about the privacy of email addresses and she will not share them with anyone else.  I would also love to provide input from some of our men as well.  Please hit the reply button and in the subject line put Desert Cactus League and I will forward your info to Orly and she will email the quick survey directly to you.

Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee of Penny Mason,  Wayne and Gwen Black are putting together a roster for our tennis club Leadership Roles for the 2013/14 season.   If you or someone you know would like to volunteer to be part of this important group of individuals,  will you please first talk to those people and then provide their names to the committee or be prepared to nominate them from the floor at our Annual Meeting on Sunday, March 17.

Hope to see you on the courts,
Kate

Weekly Update, February 10, from President Kate

Hi all,

We’re all coming off of the “highs” of the amazing Cancer Awareness Tennis Tournament Event.  I don’t have an official number yet as all the bills are not in and posted.  But, I have received word that we highly expect the number to be over…drum roll please…$3,000!!!  That is just amazing.  When you see Penny Jacobsen and Nancy Restum in the park please share your thanks for chairing this amazing event.

Palm Creek Tennis Tournament – Feb 21-24
Penny Mason and Connie Emerson, the chairs for the Palm Creek Tennis Tournament, have asked me to remind all levels of players to sign up for the tournament on Feb. 21 - 24.  We hope to have three divisions based on skill level, so there is no excuse not to participate.  That means all levels, including our 2.5 players!  What do you have to lose??? It only costs $5 to enter, it’s a lot of fun, and no matter the outcome you can write it off as a wonderful learning experience.  Deadline for sign up is Sunday, Feb. 17.

The championship matches for each division of players will be played at 11:30 and 2:00 on Sunday the 24th.  Following the championships, approx. 4:00 p.m., we will have a sandwich dinner for all tennis club members and guests (not just tournament participants) at a cost of $3.00 each to be paid prior to eating.  A signup sheet for dinner will be on the tennis board.

So far we have 5 mens teams, 9 ladies teams and 9 mixed.  But, we want to fill our courts so help us get 12 teams in each category.  Entry forms are located on the tennis club bulletin board on the side facing the tennis pavillion.  If you would like an electronic copy, email me and I will forward it to you.

Tennis Racquet Stringing
If you're playing in the tournament, and even if you aren’t, you might want to get that racquet restrung.  One of the causes of tennis elbow is a racquet that has not been restrung when it needed to be.  So, give Palm Creek Tennis Club member Mike Murray a call x 7488 and get it taken care of.  Mike gets most racquets strung the same day and for the extremely reasonable price of $20 unless you want something special.

Entertainment Chair Set-up
A huge thank you to everyone who showed up to help.  As it turned out the chairs were already on the floor from the Sunday church service so most of the set-up was done before 3pm.  But it was great to have a huge group of volunteers!

Our next date is a Bingo take down on Monday evening February 25th.  I will remind you again in the 2/22 weekly update, but it would be great if you could mark your calendars right now to be at the Ballroom at 9PM ready to help.

Desert Cactus League – Wednesday at 1pm
This Wednesday two of our Palm Creek Men’s teams will be playing home games here at Palm Creek.  Courts 1-4 will be the site of these matches.  The matches are scheduled to start at 1pm.  It would be great to have some of our members to come out to the courts to cheer on the Palm Creek Men’s teams!!  And, the weather should be getting warmer by Wednesday so BYOB and a snack to share and lets have an unplanned happy hour after the matches.   The visiting teams will be the Robson Net Results and Mission Royale.  Let’s cheer on our guys but still show these visiting teams a little Palm Creek hospitality!!!

People Update
I recently received this email from Larry Heinz:
Hi Guys:

By now, I'm sure, you know that Carol passed away on Jan. 31st.  She had fought the cancer battle for nearly seven years with two operations, several fluid drains from her lungs and all too many Chemo treatments.  She maintained her good spirit and attitude to the end.  She made it as easy as possible on me and our daughter and son.  Although, she had reservations about giving up the fight, she did it with grace and dignity.  In the end she went to hospice with the attitude that it was best for us.  She knew what she wanted for her funeral and burial.  It was a beautiful service which honored her.  There were over 350 people at the service.  At the reception, following the service, I placed the pictures you had sent of the women's tennis players and the happy hour gang in the reception hall.  I wanted everyone to know of our dear friends from Palm Creek that we miss so much.

As you know, Carol's great love was making friends, tennis, and helping her students.  We have set up a scholarship fund in her name at the College that she had worked.

As for me, I have my ups and downs.  Although, I knew there was going to be this sad ending, I still was not prepared for it.  My daughter and son have been great.  My plans are to get through most of the necessary paper work here in Colorado, then spend a couple of weeks with my daughter's family in Texas and then go to AZ to visit Palm Creek friends.

I wish to express my deep appreciation for your support and kindness to Carol and me during these trying years of Carol's illness.

      Thank you,
          Larry Heinze

I also received Carol’s obituary right after I sent out last weeks update but that I thought some of you would still want to see it:
Carol Heinze
June 21, 1944 –January 31, 2013
Residence: Greeley
Age: 68
Carol Ann Heinze, 68, of Greeley, CO passed away January 31, 2013 in the care of Hospice of Northern Colorado at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. She was born June 21, 1944 in Ft. Collins, CO to Harold and Louise (Hunter) Stroh.
Carol grew up on the family farm northeast of Ft. Collins and graduated from Ft. Collins High School in 1962. She continued her education at Colorado State University. Two years into her studies at CSU, Carol and Larry Heinze were united in marriage in Ft. Collins on June 21, 1964. Because Larry was serving in the U.S. Air Force, Carol continued her education at various locations and universities over the next few years and completed her degree at the University of Northern Colorado. Carol was a stay at home mom while her children were young, then later worked for the American Cancer Society, Greeley Evans School District 6, and Aims Community College where she was an Admissions Counselor. She retired from Aims in 2004 which gave her more time for playing tennis, traveling and especially spending more time with her grandchildren. Carol and Larry also enjoyed traveling in their motor home and wintering in Arizona. Carol was a member of the Loveland Rotary Club, Greeley Tri Delta Alumnae Chapter, Greeley Republican Women, Tennis Association of Greeley, First Congregational United Church of Christ, and Aims Community College Foundation Board.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Heinze of Greeley; son, Brian Heinze and wife Julie of Evergreen, CO; daughter Lauren Gilhooly and husband Todd of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Keegan, Liam, and Todd Gilhooly all of San Antonio; brother, Tom Stroh of Evans, CO; and sister, Margaret Collart of Palo Alto, CA. Tennis Lessons
Yup, I just cannot say enough about the wonderful job Skip, Walt and Rhoda are doing on Tuesdays at 2pm.  Rhoda, although no longer a Palm Creek resident, has Park Management approval to come into the park as a tennis instructor as she is not getting paid.   We have to really appreciate that she is willing to give her time to our tennis club!!  Thanks Rhoda.

Hope to see you on the courts,
Kate

Help needed

Hi all,

We are scheduled to do the chair set up for the park starting on Feb 22nd.  Due to the conflict with the pickleball club’s in house tournament, Pickleball has asked us to take on the chair set up for this Sunday, February 10th at 3pm.  Pickleball is going to take on one of our chair set up responsibilities in return.

Ken Swanson is the chair for the entertainment chair set ups.  We are looking for as many volunteers as possible.  The more volunteers the faster we get the ballroom set up.  There are no tables involved – just taking the chairs off the racks and setting them up in the marked rows.

The tennis club will receive payment for our efforts.  Please mark your calendars right now for this Sunday, Feb 10th at 3pm.

Hope to see you in the ballroom on Sunday –

Kate

Weekly Update from President Kate

Hi all,

Cancer Awareness Tournament – It’s a wrap!
This year’s cancer awareness tournament and dinner/auction/raffle was a tremendous success.  Thank you and hat’s off to this year’s chairs, Penny Jacobsen and Nancy Restum.  It was a great evening, the lasagna and salad was delicious, and the auction not only had wonderful items but also was very entertaining.   And, there were just so many raffle prizes that almost everyone walked away with something in their hands.  The tables were all decorated and the room was just packed!!!  As soon as we get all the numbers tabulated I will share with you the tennis club’s contribution to this very worthy cause.  Also a huge thank you to everyone who participated in the tournament, worked on the tournament and dinner, and everyone who attended the dinner.  We could not have done it without you!

People Update
It is with a heavy heart that I share with you that a dear friend of the tennis club, Carol Heize passed on Thursday, January 31st.  Below are the last two entries made by Carol’s daughter Lauren in the caring bridge website:

·         Thank you so much for all the love and support given to my mom and our family. We can not express our gratitude enough.
Mom's funeral service will be held Tuesday, February 5 at 11:00 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, address 2101 16th St, Greeley CO 80631.
·         Written Jan 31, 2013 9:20pm
Thank you all for your sweet notes and for your prayers. My mom was an angel on earth and my lifelong best friend. Thankfully, blessedly, we know where she is and that gives us great comfort.
As I paused while typing this message I stop to listen and check that I'm on the same planet I was on just a couple of hours ago when she was here-it doesn't seem to be the same place.
When someone you love becomes a memory. The memory becomes a treasure. She will always be a treasure to us.

Tennis Stringing
For those of you who have recently returned to Palm Creek I want to share with you the good news that we now have a tennis stringer here are the park.  Tennis Club member, Mike Murray, x7488 will gladly restring your racquet.  Just give Mike a call and set a time.  He generally turns it around the very same day.  The rule of thumb on restringing of your racquet is to have it restrung the same number of times in a year equal to the number of times you play tennis per week.  So, if you play tennis 3 times a week you should have your racquet restrung 3 times a year or once every 4 months.  I have heard nothing but positive reviews from all the tennis club members who have had Mike restring their racquets.
Palm Creek Tennis Tournament – February 21-24
This year’s tennis tournament will be played Thursday – Sunday February 21, 22, 23 and 24.  There will be three divisions in each of the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed tournaments.  Now is the time to call one of your tennis friends and ask if they would like to team up with you and compete in this years tournament.   There will be printed entry forms in the tennis club bulletin board.   Connie Emerson and Penny Mason are the chairs for this year’s tournament and I know it will be a great event.  But, don’t wait too long as there will only be four teams in each division so get your entry forms submitted as soon as you can.  If you have any questions please call Penny at 6603 or Connie at 6030.
Court Maintenance
The additional windscreens arrived and a huge thanks to all the volunteers who showed up to install them.  I know I can’t say enough for how much we appreciate all the work done by Glenn Arnold, Bob Fulton and Walt Krahl for all their hard work on court maintenance and keeping our ball machines in working order.  Thanks guys!
Tennis Lessons
Just another reminder that tennis lessons are on Tuesdays at 2pm.  It is a lot of fun and I always walk away with at least one insight.  So, mark your calendar and come on out – its free and its fun!
Hope to see you on the courts,
Kate

Cancer Awareness Awards Dinner Auction

Members and friends of the tennis club gathered in the beautifully decorated San Tan Room on Saturday evening, February 2nd to top off the week's Cancer Awareness Activities.  Earlier in the week we'd had a tennis tournament with competitions in Ladies' Doubles, Men's Doubles and Mixed Doubles.  At the dinner, the various winners were presented with prize gifts.  Before dinner our auctioneer, Mike Kirsch, took charge and got our dinner guests digging deep into their pockets for the right to take home some of the fantastic items donated to the cause.  A fantastic dinner was served with all of us enjoying lasagna, Caesar salad and bread.  Once dinner had been eaten the winners of the many raffle items were announced.  Our dinner guests were generous in buying raffle tickets as well and many went home with multiple prizes.  Good work all!  And many, many thanks to chairpersons Nancy Restum and Penny Jacobson for getting us all together for such a great cause.  Words of gratitude go out also to the many other people who did a fantastic job behind the scenes and at the buffet table to help us enjoy such a wonderful evening.

The crowd gathered.

We took time to check out the raffle and auction items.
Nancy Restum called us to order and then Mike Kirsch auctioned off the items.

We awarded the winners in the various tournament categories..
